Some software that I use
All of the below software are free, in the GNU sense of the word. All of them are cross-platform, meaning that they operate on multiple operating systems such as MS-Windows or GNU/Linux. Some of them take a while to get used to, but all are worth the investment.
- R is an open-source statistical environment. There is too much to say here. RStudio is one very good interface to R.
- GNU-Emacs will do everything except wash windows (it can probably do that, too).
- LyX is a sophisticated document processor that works as a front-end to the LaTeX typesetting system. It works in conjunction with R via Sweave; see this page by Gregor Gorjanc.
- Sage is a web-based computer algebra system. Don't bother with all of the trouble of installing it on your own system. Just use the online interface; there is a server linked from the project page.
- Maxima is another computer algebra system, but not web based. Maxima works particularly well with GNU-Emacs and LaTeX by way of Imaxima and/or Emaxima.
- LibreOffice is a complete Office productivity suite that mirrors MS-Office.
- GIMP (GNU Image Manipulation Program) is akin to a free Adobe Photoshop.
- The Tor Browser Bundle is the only way to browse the web these days. Well, TBB, and the Emacs Web Wowser.
- I use the Gentoo Linux operating system.
